WHAT IS AN ESSENTIAL OIL?

Essential oils are both complex and magical. Aromatherpists, myself included believe they are the life force of the plant, similar to the human spirit.
Researchers say they are a mixture of organic compounds such as ketones. terpenes, esters, aldehydes, alcohols, and hundreds of other molecules, many two small or complex to classify under a microscope.
What they do, rather than what they are is much easier to understand. As the molecules of essential oils are so  tiny and quickly evaporate, they penetrate our skin and enter the blood stream and organs, before eventually being excreted. Scientists have found that the same oils collect in the same areas of the body time and time again, within a few hours of being massaged into the skin. This fact makes them so unique and therapeutic.
The fact that essential oils have healing properties is beyond doubt. Scientists are studying botanicals and are finding more and more vital ingredients in nature, rather than in a test tube. Aspirin for example comes from the Willow Tree, and Australian Tea Tree contains a germicide far more powerful than carbolic. Carrots are full of beta-carotine, now shown to be an important weapon against cancer.
The more researchers study plants and their properties, the more benefits they discover from every organic compound in nature. It confirms that everything is there for a reason. The most interesting for me is, the latest research confirms the herbal traditions healers have practiced for centuries.
